[movies]D.W. Griffith - A Corner in Wheat (1909) - D.W. Griffith
A Corner in Wheat is a 1909 short film which tells of a greedy tycoon who tries to corner the world market on wheat, destroying the lives of the people who can no longer afford to buy bread. It was directed by D. W. Griffith and adapted by Griffith and Frank E. Woods from the novel The Pit (1903) by Frank Norris. Intercutting (cross-cutting) between still tableaux of the poor in the bread line and the lavish, active parties of the wealthy speculator somewhat anticipates the collision montage whi...

In The Border States was directed by D.W. Griffith in 1910. Griffith was born in Kentucky in 1875 so as a youth he must have heard many tales of the Civil War. He went back to that war for many of his films including this one which tells an interesting little story of a young girl who saves he life of a Southern soldier and is later rewarded..

A 1911 short directed by D,W. Griffith. A simple story, typical of Griffith with Donald Crisp as one of the cops and Blanch Sweet as the neighbor. Billy Bitzer was cameraman. Notice the AB on the side of the stairs. This was what the American Biograph company used to protect their copyright on their films. You might also note that the burglars are wearing jackets and ties.

[movies]House of Darkness
The House of Darkness was directed by D.W. Griffith for the Biograph Company in 1913. Its theme is how music soothes the insane mind. It deals with an escaped mental patient who threatens a woman with a gun, but backs off when she plays the piano for him. It is sentimental ad many of Griffith's films are but the acting is a bit subdued for the silent film of the period. It is worth a look.

[movies]A Calamitous Elopement
A Calamitous Elopement was directed by D.W. Griffith for the Biograph Company in 1908. One of the hundreds of films Griffith made for the company, it is a not particularly distinguished comedy about the comic complications a couple encounter when eloping. These pictures were often made in a week and were sometimes not well thought out. For example, why did she elope with an empty trunk?

Before gaining fame as an action hero, Douglas Fairbanks appeared in this oddity of a film from 1916, supposedly co-written by the star himself, D.W. [movies]On the Neva banks
Soviet montage Lev Kuleshov was among the very first to theorize about the relatively young medium of the cinema in the 1920s. For him, the unique essence of the cinema that which could be duplicated in no other medium is editing. He argues that editing a film is like constructing a building. Brick-by-brick (shot-by-shot) the building (film) is erected. His often-cited Kuleshov Experiment established that montage can lead the viewer to reach certain conclusions about the action in a film...
